The Bamberg Baskets are playing one of their most impressive seasons in recent years. Consistent performances, confident appearances, and players taking noticeable steps forward have turned heads across the easyCredit BBL and resulted in winning the BBL Cup in February.

While strong systems, talent, and team chemistry all play a role, there is another factor quietly shaping Bamberg’s success this season: mental development. In modern professional basketball, individual skill development is only one part of the equation. The mental side — how players manage pressure, stay consistent, and handle adversity — often determines whether they can translate talent into performance over the course of a long season. And according to Bamberg’s players, this is exactly where Stefan Weissenboeck has made a significant impact.

Staying Level Throughout the Season

For guard Ibi Watson, working with Stefan goes far beyond traditional skill development. While the on-court improvements are important, the mental component stands out the most. “Stefan is my man. So many things make working with him special. The biggest side of working with him is the mental side,” Watson explains. “Of course, he also breaks my shot down into details and he helps me become a better version of myself skill-wise on the court. But the biggest thing is he keeps the mind in the right place. He keeps you successful.”

Over the course of a demanding season, Watson highlights how crucial that mental stability has been. The highs and lows of professional basketball can be challenging, especially when expectations rise and pressure increases.

“For me, he keeps me level-headed throughout the season,” Watson says. “This year there are so many positive moments and he helps me enjoy them. And he taught me how to embrace them. But I also understand that the work never stops.”

The ability to stay grounded during success while pushing through difficult stretches is a key component of consistent performance. It's something Watson has experienced firsthand. “There are also moments in the season where it's not so easy and things that are not going well, but he helps me to get through. The biggest thing for me is he's able to help me stay at a certain level throughout the season. It's a tough sport with many ups and downs, but he helps me keep everything level – especially this year.”

Watson also emphasizes the personal connection that has developed along the way, describing Stefan not only as a coach and mentor, but also as someone “I can call a friend”.

Development on Both Sides of the Game

Big man EJ Onu has also seen significant progress this season and credits both the technical and mental work with Stefan as important factors in his development. “Stefan, with his personality, is always in a good mood and that alone helps with the vibe in practice,” Onu says, pointing to the environment Stefan creates during individual sessions and team workouts.

On the court, the focus has been on refining details in Onu’s game. “He’s helped me with my hands, making reads and finishing as well with his unique drills,” Onu explains. “The biggest thing we have worked on is keeping the ball high to have less turnovers around the paint. And we do stuff like this weekly and I’ve noticed a real change in my game.”

But similar to Watson, Onu highlights the mental component as a major area of growth. “On the mental side he’s helped quite a bit with staying calm in stressful situations and self-assessment,” Onu says. “For the most part of the season he can attest I’ve been much better with handling stressful games and have shown a different side to myself when adversity hits. That is in large part due to Stefan helping me with this.”

This improved composure has translated directly into game situations, where Onu has demonstrated increased confidence and stability under pressure.

The trust in Stefan's experience and approach also plays a key role. “A lot of the times when he talks and gives advice I’m usually very focused on what he’s saying because his resume speaks for itself,” Onu adds. “And a lot of stuff he has taught me I’ve seen it happen in real time with my game.”

The Invisible Factor Behind Performance

While fans often focus on statistics and highlight plays, the mental side of development remains largely invisible. Confidence, resilience, and composure are built over time: through conversations, individual sessions, and consistent daily work.

For the Bamberg Baskets, that work appears to be paying off.

Players are showing growth, handling pressure with greater maturity, and delivering consistent performances throughout the season. And while many factors contribute to success, the mental development led by Stefan has quietly become an important piece of Bamberg’s strong campaign.

As the season continues, one thing remains clear: The physical work happens on the court, but the foundation for consistency is often built in the mind.
